Summer Nights

I’m lucky enough to be part of a collective of yarn artists, Derbyshire Dyers, who run a monthly market night on Facebook with exclusive, unrepeatable colours.

This month market night is nearly here (8pm, July 30th) and I’m working hard to get some fabulous new colours out of the kitchen and ready to be turned into beautiful knitted or crocheted works of art.

One of my favourite things about working alongside other yarn artists is how sharing colours, techniques and inspiration can stimulate the imagination and that ability to be able to bounce ideas off like minded individuals leads to a supportive community. I also love to see how different people respond to the same stimulus, in this case the phrase ‘Summer Nights’. It’s fascinating to get a fleeting glance into the mind of an individual and to discover a tiny facet of what makes their soul tick. I can’t wait to see what Suzanne and Carrie have in store.

Summer Nights for me conjures up feeling of freedom, adventure, exploration and that anything is possible. Growing up in northern England the nights always seemed to stretch out forever and there’s always a healthy dose of nostalgia that accompanies it of family holidays in Scotland (and later a summer spent in Aberdeenshire) where it never seemed to get dark. Of course the musician in me can’t help set this all to a killer soundtrack of infectious, joyous music that you can’t help but shed all inhibitions and dance your heart out too.

With all this in my head, there was only one way to go, to take my inspiration from a beloved film that encapsulates all these emotions in one summer holiday, set to a killer soundtrack…

Please welcome the first of my Summer Nights Market Night colours inspired by the one and only Dirty Dancing!image1 (14)

Wild Spinster

It took a while, but Wild Spinster is up and running with bespoke, hand painted yarn and plans for more.

Currently you can find some unique colours on it, left over from the first Derbyshire Dyers market night. If you’ve not come across Market Nights as a knitter or crocheter, look out for them on Facebook. Groups of indie yarn artists get together to dye one-off colourways inspired by a theme. They’re first come, first served and a lot of fun.

Derbyshire Dyers will be holding their second market night on July 30th with ‘Summer Nights’ inspired yarn.

Regent’s Park

Right now, I’m looking out the window at one of the loveliest, certainly one of the sunniest days of the year so far, and editing pictures from one of the coldest of last year. Just after Christmas my family, me and my camera spent a few days in London and despite it being bitterly cold, we had a beautifully atmospheric walk in Regent’s Park. (Ignore the fact my dad is coatless – he’s northern – honestly, it was freezing!)

Here’s a few of my favourite shots from Regent’s Park:

As for the rest of our trip, we were really lucky with the weather and despite the cold we had gorgeous blue skies.

Hooked

Yesterday I spent the afternoon shooting crochet hooks for a new collaboration with Kate of Wiseheart Studio. Kate’s a weaver and is currently in the process of creating crochet rolls out of her own handwoven fabrics but she needed some fabric for lining them. Not content with the commercially available fabric, she decided to get her own printed and asked me to produce some images she could use. After an afternoon of balancing crochet hooks (harder than it looks), here are some of the final images.

I’m thrilled with how the images have turned out and can’t wait to see what Kate does with them.
